Being self-sustainable at Little Sossus!

Little Sossus Lodge

A Little Sossus Lodge is 300km from the nearest city. It is important for us to be self sustainable. therefore we grow 60% of our own vegetables & fruit and all our own herbs on the farm. Beforehand preparation of the soil ensure a maximum output capacity. We avoid using synthetic pesticides and fertilizers by using homemade sprays and organic compost, manure and leaf mould. Healthy soil builds up resistance to attacks, so all starts with the soil, healthy and nutrient rich. We invite nature to do what it does best in the desert. In the desert water must be used very wisely therefore we make use of sunken sprayers – the water collect in the beds. Bare soil like here in the desert is covered with mulch and leaf mould and veggies with similar water requirement is planted together. Veggies grown on the lodge are carrots, lettuce, spinach and baby marrows.

To forget how to dig the earth and to tend the soil is to forget ourselves. - Mahatma Ghandi. We are very proud of our herb garden. We use only fresh herbs in our dishes and for garnishing purposes. Herbs that we grow on the Lodge include parsley, lemon verbena, rosemary, basil and thyme. Trees that grow on the farm are paw-paw, lemon and pomegranate. And after 17 years„ the olive trees also bring forward their most delicious black & green olives.

To garden is about taking a small step towards a time we once knew, a time when we were in touch with what we ate. It’s about remembering what we have forgotten. It is about returning to our roots. - Jane Griffiths
